Development Bank of Ethiopia Joins Finance in Common (FiCS) — Africa’s Development Champion Steps onto the World Stage of Sustainable Finance
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia — The Development Bank of Ethiopia (DBE) is proud to announce its formal membership in the Finance in Common System (FiCS), the world’s foremost global coalition of Public Development Banks (PDBs). The official welcome letter, signed by FiCS Secretary General Adama Mariko on behalf of the entire Finance in Common community, marks a transformative milestone in DBE’s journey towards becoming a globally recognized, development-oriented institution.
About Finance in Common (FiCS)
Established in 2020 during a historic first-ever gathering of all Public Development Banks in Paris, Finance in Common (FiCS) has grown into the world’s most powerful coalition of public development finance institutions. Today, FiCS unites over 530 Public Development Banks from across the globe, collectively managing USD 23 trillion in assets and deploying more than USD 2.5 trillion in annual investments — representing over 10% of total global investment flows.
FiCS serves as a global platform for PDBs to align their strategies, investment patterns, and operating modalities with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. Through 14 active Thematic Coalitions spanning areas from climate finance to urban resilience, FiCS members share best practices, co-finance projects, and collectively shape the global development finance agenda.
The FiCS Secretariat is hosted by Agence Française de Développement (AFD), France’s development finance agency, which has been instrumental in building the network into the formidable force it is today.
DBE’s Accession to FiCS: A Strategic Milestone
By formally joining FiCS, the Development Bank of Ethiopia gains privileged access to:
- The collective knowledge and experience of over 530 PDBs worldwide
- Collaborative frameworks to address climate change, SME financing, and financial inclusion
- Participation in the FiCS Financial Innovation Lab and the PDB Guarantee Hub
- Strengthened institutional credibility and international visibility
- Access to concessional and blended finance instruments through multilateral partnerships
- Co-financing opportunities with institutions such as the World Bank and African Development Bank
“By joining the FiCS initiative, DBE gains access to the collective experience of public development banks, as well as opportunities for knowledge-sharing and institutional exchanges on strategies, investment patterns, activities, and operating modalities. We look forward to exploring opportunities for cooperation with DBE in the months and years ahead.”
— Adama Mariko, Secretary General, Finance in Common
DBE has also been included among the signatories of the FiCS Joint Declaration — a landmark document representing a shared commitment by PDBs worldwide to build a sustainable future for all and to address climate challenges and strengthen multilateral cooperation across the international financial system.
A Heartfelt Thank-You to AFD
DBE wishes to extend its profound gratitude to the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) for its invaluable support throughout the process of DBE’s accession to FiCS. As the host institution of the FiCS Secretariat and a long-standing partner of DBE, AFD played a pivotal role in facilitating this historic membership. The partnership between DBE and AFD stands as a testament to what can be achieved when development finance institutions collaborate with purpose, vision, and commitment to shared global goals.
