Currently, he serves as Chief Executive Officer of the Ethiopian Securities Exchange (ESX). Prior to this role, he held several senior leadership and advisory positions, including Senior Project Manager at the Ethiopian Securities Exchange Project Office, Private Sector Development Specialist and Task Team Lead at the International Finance Corporation (IFC), and Senior Policy Advisor at the Ethiopian Investment Commission.
He also served as a Research Fellow and Doctoral Researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition in Munich, Germany, and as a Research Fellow at the Centre for Globalization, OBREAL, IELPO at the University of Barcelona in Barcelona, Spain. In academia, he has served as a Lecturer at Haramaya University and as an Adjunct Lecturer at Addis Ababa University.
He was also a member of the national technical and negotiating committee that led Ethiopia’s accession process to the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). In addition, he contributed to the establishment of Ethiopian Investment Holdings as a member of the national committee of experts. He has also served as an invited lecturer, PhD advisor, and academic evaluator for institutions including the University of Turin, Haramaya University, Addis Ababa University, and Bahir Dar University.
He earned his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in International Law and Economics from Bocconi University in Milan, Italy. He also holds an LL.M. in International Economic Law and Policy, cum laude, from the University of Barcelona, an LL.M. in Business Law, cum laude, from Addis Ababa University, and an LL.B. in Law, cum laude, from Haramaya University.

Currently, he serves as President of Addis Ababa University (AAU), Ethiopia’s first autonomous public university and a national leader in higher education, research, and innovation. He has held several senior government leadership positions, including State Minister for Higher Education, State Minister for Science and Higher Education, General Manager of the Ministry of Education’s Higher Education Expansion Program, and General Director for Higher Education Administration Affairs.
In academia, he has served as an Assistant Professor at Jimma University and as a Lecturer at the School of Business and Economics of Addis Ababa University. He has also contributed as an external examiner for the College of Business and Economics at Addis Ababa University.
He earned his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Commerce and Management Studies from Andhra University, India, in 2010, where he was awarded the Best PhD Thesis Medal. He also holds an MSc in Accounting and Finance (2006) and a BA in Accounting (2001), both from Addis Ababa University.
