The Development Bank of Ethiopia (DBE) held a consultative meeting today at its headquarters with senior executives from banks and microfinance institutions. The discussion focused on exploring ways to support youth and women entrepreneurs, with financial backing obtained from the African Development Bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The meeting particularly targeted youth and women engaged in micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), especially in the agricultural sector. It brought together selected banks and microfinance institutions operating across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the discussion, the Minister of Labor and Skills, H.E. Ms. Muferihat Kamil, emphasized that financial institutions, which have already made significant contributions in supporting youth and women entrepreneurs, should further enhance their efforts by introducing innovative ideas and strengthening their support mechanisms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Minister also noted that since the majority of Ethiopia\u2019s population resides in rural areas, financial institutions must expand their outreach and focus on job creation initiatives to address unemployment challenges in rural parts of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On his part, the President of the Development Bank of Ethiopia, Dr. Esayas Kassa, highlighted that the Bank is actively working to provide financial support to MSMEs.He noted that the Bank is committed to offering loans at low and affordable interest rates to make financing more accessible, particularly for youth and women entrepreneurs. He further stressed that organizing such a discussion platform is crucial, as it underscores the importance of collective effort and cooperation among all stakeholders to successfully implement the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A presentation was delivered on the implementation of the \u201cAgri-MSMEs Development for Jobs Project,\u201d supported by the African Development Bank, outlining its objectives and the roles of stakeholders. Participants expressed their appreciation for DBE\u2019s initiative and commitment to making the project a reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They also underscored that the successful implementation of the project would bring significant benefits both at the national and institutional levels. In this regard, they reaffirmed their commitment to working closely with relevant stakeholders to ensure its effectiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Responding to the ideas raised, Dr. Esayas Kassa reiterated that DBE, as a development-oriented institution rather than a profit-driven one, is committed to working collaboratively with partner institutions through dedicated follow-up and support. He added that the project will serve as a foundation for broader future initiatives and commended the proactive engagement of financial institutions in proposing ideas and demonstrating willingness to collaborate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. Esayas also emphasized that the Bank will take ownership and responsibility for ensuring the project\u2019s success and future activities. He noted that any policy and procedural challenges will be addressed in collaboration with relevant stakeholders to achieve the desired outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In her concluding remarks, Minister Muferihat Kamil stated that, given the direct involvement of participants in the project, there is a need to adopt new and improved approaches compared to past practices. She stressed the importance of incorporating the ideas and feedback of professionals and leaders to ensure the project\u2019s success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She further called on all stakeholders to take ownership of the project, engage in continuous dialogue, and propose solutions that will ensure its success.
